Great Illustration Work In Web Design

I’ve always been a big fan of imaginative and unique illustration and lately I’ve run across a handfull of sites I feel are worth mentioning. They aren’t all the same, some are simple, some are complicated, some are dirty, some are clean but they’re all excellent examples of what can be done with the merging of creative illustration and unique web design.

Baranda Tequila

The illustration is small, and simple, but had a big impact with it’s meanness and dirtiness. It gives you an instant impression of the product and/or brand, and enforces it strongly with one image.

Satsu Design

Another example of simple illustration that goes the distance in giving the company an image. Here, the designers’ use of the weatheres, dirty look merges excellently with the sites background to give a strong sense of antiquity and authority.

GenesisChurch.tv

While GenesisChurch does use a tad bit of old, weathered style, it’s biggest contribution is it’s use of shape and motion on the flash embed on the first page. Circles, splatters, and decorative elements merge to give life to the photos.

Stooge Records

Again the decorative, silhouetted style is used, this time with a good eye toward color. The slight gradient in the background pink and the dark gray form a perfectly beautiful picture.

Belowe the Surface

Belowe the Surface is an excellent example of simpleness, and imagery to highlight the site’s content. While there isn’t a lot of content here, the illustration is used to frame and lead the eye, giving the content a much more important vibe.

Orange Willow: Wendy’s Blog

Wend has an excellent blog and an excellent design. The beauty in this design, is the way it draws the eye from the header to the content underneath. On my 1024×768 resolution, the header takes up at least 50% of above the fold, but it doesn’t feel like the space is wasted.

Delicious Monster

Simply put one of the smoothest, interesting, and most aesthetically pleasing flash embeds I’ve ever seen. The little monster character is perfect, and the animation is very professional yet unexpected.

PFA Connections

Although I typically frown upon big uses of flash, this site’s use of illustration was above and beyond. The color choices are beautiful, the silouettes interesting, and the use of splatters, small animations and sketchy elements all come together in a grpahical cornucopia of creativity.
