Design Really Is What You Leave Out

So I’ve been beating my head against the desk trying to figure out how to style a few things I wanted to include on each article page. Things like: tags for the article, a ‘print this’ link, and maybe a few links to digg , del.icio.us et al.

I had intended on using a background image for the whole thing, to sort-of set it off from the actual content, as you can see in the screenshot. But there was just something weird about it. The gradients worked pretty well on the front page, but on a white background it seemed very forced. Well a small slip on my part accidentally removed the background image, and viola! It looked great without a background at all.

The moral of the story: design really is about what you leave out, and not always trying to think of original decorative elements to add.
